What Is My IP?

About This Tool

Hosted on the campus network and provided by UNC Information Technology Services as a network diagnostic tool. IP addresses shown are those visible to campus applications, including VPN addresses. For questions, see the Determine Client IP Address help article.

Why use this tool?

While many sites exist to show your IP address, this tool runs locally on the campus network and offers several advantages:

  • Devices on campus without general internet connectivity can still reach this site.
  • VPN users see the campus address assigned by the VPN, not their home internet address.
  • Campus addresses include additional detail — network, VLAN, building, and NAC information.
  • Further detail is available via the Network Information Tool (NIT) for authorized users.

Open Source

The source code for this tool is available on GitHub. It is written in Python using the Flask framework and is released under the MIT License.

The tool was built for the UNC Chapel Hill campus environment but is designed to be adapted by other higher education institutions. Campus network ranges, DNS security filtering settings, and institution branding are all configurable without changing code. Integrations with network management systems such as Infoblox IPAM and Extreme Networks NAC are optional — the core IP address and geolocation features work for any deployment.

If your institution runs a similar tool or adapts this one, we'd love to hear about it.
